Introduction
Charlotte Walker, a very talented pupil of The Samara Ballet
School, died in a tragic car accident in February 2008. She had been a pupil for seven years and was awarded a
scholarship in 2007 in recognition of her burgeoning talent in both ballet and tap.
During her scholarship year it became apparent, to all who saw
her dance, that Charlotte had the makings of a beautiful dancer which was borne out in her leading role of Gretel
in the school shows in January and February 2008, just a few days before the accident.
To remember Charlotte's contribution to the school and her love
of dance and music, we set up Charlotte's Fund as a celebration of Charlotte's life and as a positive and lasting
memorial.
Funding
The initial start-up money for the fund was donated by parents
and friends of the ballet school and by the generous donations of those attending Charlotte's funeral. The fund is
held in a separate bank account called 'Charlotte's Fund'. Future fund-raising activities at the ballet school will
add to Charlotte's Fund, as will individual donations.
Who can apply for
help?
The fund will provide financial help for those who need it
during their time at the school. Parents may apply for regular help with ballet fees or for one-off help
towards the purchase of uniform or exam fees. Senior pupils may also apply for help with audition fees or travel
when progressing to full time dance education.
All applications to the fund will be totally confidential and
all reasonable requests will be considered. Whilst formal proof of hardship will not be required, all
applicants to the fund will be requested to complete an application form which can be downloaded here.
Charlotte's Achievement
Awards
Each branch of the school has been given a trophy which is
presented at the end of each term to celebrate the achievement of an individual for that term. The trophy can
be held for the duration of the following term after which it is returned, ready for the next recipient. The awards
are not necessarily for the best dancer! They may be given for showing exceptional progress; for showing
improvement in confidence; for overcoming a 'mental block' or finally mastering a step, or for helping others in
lesson time.
Charlotte was very good at helping other members of her dance
class, particularly in tap, and was happy to demonstrate steps and 'lead the warm up' at the start of lessons. She
showed, by example, how to help others achieve their potential when they were struggling to cope with a new
exercise and the achievement awards are a positive encouragement to those who do have to work very hard to
achieve.
The recipient of each award can be found on the Achievement Awards Page.
